Submission Guidelines

Thank you for your interest in writing for Strange Moon Press!

We are currently accepting proposals for both fiction and non-fiction work.

We do not publish poetry (unless it is integral to a larger work,) political works, graphic sexual or violent content, or manifestos.

We are especially interested in sci-fi and fantasy adventures in the tradition of H.G. Wells, Jules Verne, Sir H. Rider Haggard, and Robert E. Howard.  We would love to get a proposal for exciting new variations on the "inner earth" exploration theme, lost worlds, etc.

We are currently accepting proposals by both email and post. To submit a proposal, please send the following:

1. Your name*, mailing address, and email address

2. The working title of your project

3. A two-paragraph synopsis of your story, and three excerpts or examples from the manuscript

4. Please indicate whether you will be including photographs, diagrams, or illustrations

5. The inspiration for your project

6.  Description of your primary or target audience (Who are you writing for?)

Anything sent by mail (hard copy) will not be returned unless a self-addressed envelope with adequate postage is provided.

Please be assured that we will give your proposal serious consideration. We know long response times are discouraging, so we will try to respond as quickly as possible.

Please send proposals to strangemoonpress@gmail.com or Strange Moon Press LLC, 10 Benning St., Suite 160-168, West Lebanon NH 03784.

* We are more than happy to allow writers to use a pseudonym for their published work, but for legal/bookkeeping purposes we need to know your real name as well.  Thank you for your cooperation.

Tips & Hints

Want to work with Strange Moon Press LLC?

Here are some tips and hints...  basically, stuff we like and things we don't like.  Use this information to your advantage.

1. Don't try to be fancy

Please don't send electronic documents with lots of fancy formatting, weird fonts, page breaks, etc.  This makes it more difficult for us to read and much more difficult work with when we are trying to format the document for publishing.

2. Please send a hard copy of larger documents

Yes, we may eventually want the electronic copy, but it's laborious to read a full-length manuscript digitally.  Our eyes are old and get tired quickly, especially after staring at multiple screens every day.    So, if you are submitting anything over 50 pages, please send a hard copy!  Thank you!

3. If we ask you to send a sample of your work, please don't direct us to your website or blog

We're pretty laid back and informal.  If you ask us if we are interested in a project, you'll probably get an answer like this:  "Sure, I'd be happy to take a look at your work.  Please send me a couple samples of your strongest work and I'll read them!"

The correct response to this is NOT "go to my website."

Asking us to go out of our way to find your work is annoying and, frankly, feels really disrespectful.

We don't have time to go to writer's websites to find content. We don't want to scroll through pages of your combo writing/crafting/cooking blog for something we can work with.

Bottom line:  If you can't fulfill a simple, straightforward request like "please send a sample of your work," it's highly unlikely that we'll be able to establish a good working relationship.

4. Get used to waiting

If we're interested, we'll let you know pretty quickly, but that doesn't mean we are going to be ready to go to press with your book in two months.  Or even in a year.

At this time we only have the capacity to publish three to four books per year.  If there are already two or three projects in the queue before we get to yours, you may be facing a long wait time.  Sorry.  Don't take it personally and unless we've actually signed a contract you always have the option of shopping your project out to other publishers.

Because you asked...

No, we aren't a "vanity press"

No, we aren't a "vanity press"

We are not a pay-to-publish or vanity press.  We don't charge our writers any fees for reading, editing, or printing.

Yes, our writers get paid

No, we aren't a "vanity press"

No, we aren't a "vanity press"

It's not always a lot (because we are a small press with a small budget) but everyone who writes for us gets paid!

Whether it's a one-time payment for a short story or an individual contract for a novel, we work with each writer to make sure they get a payment they are satisfied with.

How to get started

No, we aren't a "vanity press"

How to get started

Whether you have a finished novel ready to go or just an idea for a story, the first step is to reach out.  Please review our submission guidelines and our "Tips and Hints" section for more information.

If you've never written before but would like to, we encourage you to submit a short story for one of our anthologies.  These are themed projects that often give writers (or aspiring writers) the inspiration they need to get into the flow.  This is an especially good option for people who are task-driven and like assignments!

We are committed to encouraging new, emerging, and young writers.
